What is Your Food Story?

A lady wearing white pants and a cream colored sweater seated on a white couch. You only see her hands holding a fork over a large bowl of veggies that she is holding on her lap.

We are all attached to our own food stories, whether we realize it or not.  What is available and convenient and what we see our parents do to provide meals can affect how we handle cooking in our own adult lives.

  • Fast food was invented around 1960. Previous to that, most Americans did not go out to eat in restaurants.
  • You might pack and bring a picnic if traveling on a long drive.
  • No one used a microwave oven until 1980.
  • American mothers went to work full-time in the 1980s, which meant they wanted more convenience in food preparation.
  • Things like cake mixes and Rice a Roni became popular because it sped up food production.

Did you have a parent who cooked?  Were you taught to cook?  Do you enjoy cooking?  Were you taught to read food labels?  Was it more important to spend less time cooking or to cook something from scratch in your family?
